Condo insurance
InsuranceFinder coverage guide · Updated September 2026
Condo insurance (HO-6) covers what is inside your condominium unit—interior walls, cabinetry, fixtures, and personal property—plus personal liability. It works in conjunction with your HOA’s master policy, which covers the common elements and building exterior. It does not duplicate HOA building coverage.
Condo coverage breakdown: unit interior, belongings & liability
A typical condo (HO-6) policy covers what is inside your unit and your personal liability. Shared buildings, roofs, and common areas usually sit on the condominium association's master policy — confirm the master policy's walls-in vs bare-walls scope with the association.
Pays to repair or replace interior finishes and improvements you own inside the unit (for example flooring, cabinets, fixtures), subject to the master policy's boundary and your HO-6 dwelling limit.
Pays for your belongings after covered perils such as fire, theft, or certain storm damage, subject to your deductible and limits.
May help with hotel and related living costs if a covered peril makes the unit uninhabitable, subject to policy terms.
Helps defend and pay covered liability claims if someone is injured in connection with your unit occupancy, plus limited medical payments to others where the form provides them.
A standard HO-6 usually does not cover the association's common elements (often on the master policy), flood, earthquake or ground movement, or wear-and-tear / maintenance failures. Assessments for master-policy deductibles or special association assessments may need loss-assessment coverage or endorsements. Always read your HO-6 form and the association's master policy together.
Who typically uses condo insurance
Condo insurance (HO-6) is typically carried by people who own a condominium unit. The association's master policy usually covers shared building structure and common areas; the HO-6 usually covers the unit interior, personal belongings, and personal liability. Renters in a condo usually need a renters policy instead. Flood and earthquake usually need separate coverage or endorsements when available.
