Classic / collector auto insurance

InsuranceFinder coverage guide · Updated September 2026

Collector auto insurance commonly uses agreed-value or stated-value coverage for vintage, antique, and modified classic cars that do not depreciate like everyday vehicles. Policies typically require that the vehicle be kept in an enclosed garage and not used as a daily driver.

Classic / collector coverage breakdown

Collector policies are often written differently from everyday personal auto. Agreed value, storage rules, and limited pleasure use are common — the form controls.

1. Agreed value

Many collector forms set a stated value for the vehicle up front. After a covered total loss, settlement often follows that agreed amount (subject to the form), rather than a declining “actual cash value” like a daily driver.

2. Liability

Pays for covered bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating the classic, subject to policy limits and state rules.

3. Physical damage

Collision and comprehensive-style coverage for the classic itself (crash, theft, vandalism, certain weather), subject to deductibles and the agreed-value or stated-value terms.

4. Storage & use rules

Enclosed garage, mileage caps, and “pleasure use only / not a daily driver” conditions are common. Regular commuting or high annual miles may not fit a collector form.

Who typically uses classic / collector auto insurance

Classic and collector auto insurance is typically carried by people who own a vintage, antique, or specially maintained car kept for shows, hobby driving, or limited pleasure use — not as a primary daily vehicle. Lenders and specialty carriers often expect documented storage and usage limits. Modified or kit cars may need a form written for that setup; the contract decides.

Important classic / collector exclusions to know:

Daily commuting, unlimited mileage, and commercial use are often outside a collector form. Racing, track events, and unlisted operators are commonly excluded or limited. Wear-and-tear, mechanical failure, and poor maintenance are usually excluded. Some forms limit coverage if the car is not stored as required. Education only — not advice to buy.
