It is important to maintain automobile insurance coverage on an uninterrupted basis as long as you own a car. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has the Insurance Information and Enforcement System (IIES), which will find uninsured vehicles.
Car insurance companies are required to report to the DMV information, cancellations, renewals, and new policies; on everyone they provide car insurance coverage. This information is tracked for all registered cars. If you have a lapse in auto insurance it can result in suspension of your car registration and driver’s license, as well as other monetary penalties.
New York State Cancellation Law does not allow car insurance companies to cancel your auto insurance coverage mid-term so long as your policy has been enforce for at least 60 days. The car insurance company can cancel your auto insurance policy mid-term if your driver’s license has been revocation or suspension of a driver’s license of any person insured under your policy, non-payment of premium, or discovery of fraud or material misrepresentation.
If a New York auto insurance company does cancel your car insurance policy mid-term they have to send you a notice at least 20 days prior to the cancellation date. Or if the mid-term cancellation is because you didn’t pay they only have to send you a notice 15 days prior to the cancellation date. Any cancellation notice must state the reason(s) for termination. In addition, a recent change in the New York car insurance, law requires any cancellation notice for nonpayment of premium to clearly state the amount due.

New York Automobile Insurance Requirements:
In New York, auto insurance has three coverages that must be purchased to meet the minimum car insurance requirements. The required car insurance coverages are Personal Injury Protection (PIP or no-fault), bodily injury liability and uninsured motorist. Additionally, someone can be ineligible for New York’s No-Fault auto insurance if they were driving while under the influence, owning an uninsured vehicle or riding an ATV or a motorcycle.
